UEFA remodels the Champions League in full convulsion by the Super League
The tournament will expand its number of participants to 36 from 2024 and the group phase disappears to make way for a league in which each team will play a minimum of ten games before entering the knockout phase
Shaken by the upheaval generated by the announcement of the creation of a semi-closed Super League that will bring together a large part of the continent's great powers, UEFA unanimously approved the reform of the Champions League from 2024 on Monday, with the aim of to make more attractive a competition that is now seriously threatened by this new tournament that has unleashed the ire of the institution that governs European football and many others.
"The (UEFA) Executive Committee approved the format" of the future Champions League, which will have a mini-championship instead of the group stage, Deputy Secretary-General Giorgio Marchetti announced at a press conference after the meeting of the organization in Montreux (Switzerland).
The ambitious reform entails the expansion of the number of participants from 32 to 36 teams, as well as the disappearance of the eight groups of the first phase and their replacement by a league that guarantees a minimum of ten games to the competitors, instead of the six current. The matches will continue to be played, as before, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but as a novelty there will be two weeks exclusively reserved for the Champions League in which there will be no duels of the Europa League or the Conference League, the third European club competition to be held. It will debut next season, which will also allow for matches of the main club tournament on Thursdays.
Within this mini-championship that will serve to screen access to the knockout phase, each team, according to its ranking, will play two games against another of the same hierarchy, three more against the squads of the second pot, three against those of the third and the remaining two against opponents from Pot 4.
